Gulfstream barn quarantined after equine herpesvirus positive

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Gulfstream Park officials released a statement Sunday afternoon confirming an equine herpesvirus positive in Barn 21 at the track. The result had an immediate impact on Saturday’s $3 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational when the entry of Super Corinto, a horse who resides in that barn with trainer Amador Sanchez, was withdrawn from the race shortly before the post-position draw.
“On January 21, Gulfstream Park identified a horse who was displaying signs of EHV. That horse was immediately transferred to Rood and Riddle Veterinary Hospital in Wellington and the affected barn, Barn 21, was placed in immediate quarantine,” the Gulfstream statement said. “Testing was expedited through the Frederick Diagnostic Laboratory in Maryland, which confirmed a positive EHV.
“Barn 21 remains in strict lockdown as per GSP protocols,” the statement continued. “One of the horses in quarantine was set to run in the Pegasus World Cup but was withdrawn prior to the post-position draw. We are awaiting further directive from the state veterinarian and will provide an update as soon as one is available.”
As a result of the quarantine, Tapeta training has been suspended here indefinitely, with the main track now to close for the general population at 9:30 a.m. daily and re-open for horses from Barn 21 to train between 10 and 10:50 a.m. until further notice.
