Greenwood duo a couple of Bears
EDMONTON, Alberta - Dale Greenwood saddles Bear Character and Bear Trieste, a powerful pair of Kentucky-breds, in Friday's $50,000 Edmonton Juvenile at Northlands Park.
The six-furlong Juvenile is the first stakes of the meeting for 2-year-olds, and it has drawn a field of eight, with six betting interests. All will carry 118 pounds.
Bear Character and Bear Trieste both are owned by Bear Stable and each is coming off a sharp victory.
Bear Character, who will be ridden by Rickey Walcott from post 8, has been favored in his two outings, both at 5 1/2 furlongs. In his debut, Bear Character finished second to Teagues Fight, whom he will face again Friday. He then romped by seven lengths as the 1-2 choice.
Bear Trieste, with Chris McGregor up, won by 1 3/4 lengths in a 3 1/2-furlong dash in his only appearance.
Teagues Fight, an Alberta-bred, is coupled with Black Eyed Monte for the Doug MacDonald-trained Rocky Mountain Turf Club Stable. Teagues Fight finished fourth at 3 1/2 furlongs, then wired his field by 1 3/4 lengths in an impressive score over Bear Character. Ron Blinston rides.
Black Eyed Monte won his only start, which was at 3 1/2 furlongs.
Hidden Speed, a Kentucky-bred trained by Ron Grieves for Bar None Ranches, won at 5 1/2 furlongs after finishing fourth going 3 1/2 furlongs in his debut.
Dale Saunders sends out Explosion, an Alberta-bred who sped to a five-length victory at 3 1/2 furlongs in his only start.
