Great Venezuela's Beyer Speed Figure jumps off page

Great Venezuela has put up the best Beyer Speed Figure for a 2-year-old filly at the Gulfstream Park meet and the number makes her look like a standout in the seventh race Saturday.

“She’s a nice filly,” said trainer Victor Barboza Jr.

Great Venezuela earned an 81 Beyer in her most recent start. The number is 14 to 55 points higher than each of the last-race Beyers put up by her seven rivals in the first-level allowance for fillies at 5 1/2 furlongs on Tapeta.

Great Venezuela earned the 81 in her second start when she won a 5 1/2-furlong maiden special weight for Florida-bred fillies on Tapeta. She tracked the pace and moved out to a 5 3/4-length victory in the Oct. 7 race. One start prior, she was second by a head in her debut, earning a Beyer of 70.

Leonel Reyes has the mount on Great Venezuela from post 8.

“I like the position outside,” Barboza said. “She’s a very fast filly. The position outside will be very helpful to the jockey.”

Great Venezuela is a daughter of Neolithic who races for her breeder, Orylana Farm. Barboza said the ownership has farms in both Venezuela and Ocala, Fla. Great Venezuela is out of the five-time winning mare Pat M’s Image.

“She’s training very good,” Barboza said. “She could win again.”

Heaven in Mind owns the field’s second-best last-race Beyer, a 67 for a win over $35,000 starter allowance rivals on Tapeta at Gulfstream on Sept. 9. She is the only two-time winner in the field. Edgard Zayas has the mount from the rail for trainer Antonio Sano.

Miah Miah, a debut winner last out with a Beyer of 43, is one of the best-bred runners in the lineup as a daughter of Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist and the multiple stakes-winning mare Mystic City, who earned $349,621.

Genuine Peril has been flattered since her maiden win last out at Colonial Downs for which she earned a Beyer of 48. The race has produced three next-out maiden winners at either Gulfstream or Colonial.

Special Affair was fourth to Omaha Girl last out in the Hallandale Beach at Gulfstream. On Monday, Omaha Girl was pre-entered in the $2 million Breeder’s Cup Juvenile Fillies.

◗ The eighth race is a first-level Tapeta allowance for Florida-bred fillies and mares at five furlongs.

Glazed Ginger will be shortening up slightly in distance when she starts as a chief contender for current Gulfstream leading trainer Jose D’Angelo. She met winners for the first time last out and set the pace over 5 1/2 furlongs before finishing third in a first-level allowance on Tapeta.

“Last time she went so, so fast,” D’Angelo said. “It was five and a half furlongs.

“This race, five furlongs, I think she has a good chance to rate.”

Glazed Ginger came from just off the pace to win her maiden going five furlongs on Tapeta on Aug. 27 at Gulfstream. She was cutting back in distance that afternoon. Her prior starts were on dirt.

“She improved so much when she changed surfaces,” D’Angelo said. “She loves the Tapeta.”
