Great Lakes: 'Sweetwater' debuts

MUSKEGON, Mich. - Past Great Lakes Downs champion Sweetwater Promise makes her 2004 Great Lakes Downs debut in Friday's Larkspur Handicap, a $40,000 event for Michigan-bred fillies and mares. The Larkspur, run at six furlongs, is the sixth race on the card.

In her last race here, the Michigan Sire Stakes in October, Sweetwater Promise finished second to Sefas Rose, a two-time Larkspur winner. A 5-year-old mare trained by James Jackson, Sweetwater Promise has been unplaced this year in Kentucky and Illinois. Jackson, who won this race last year with Born to Dance, has named Terry Houghton to ride Sweetwater Promise, who will carry 117 pounds to Midway Girl's highweight of 118 pounds.

Charlie's Indian has four wins and a second from five starts, all at this track. Regular rider Freddie Mata, the leader at this meet, gets the call at 115 pounds.
