Great Lakes Downs track report

Its His Time bided his time before making his winning move in Tuesday's 34th running of the $50,000 Dowling Stakes at Great Lakes Downs. Under Freddie Mata, Its His Time, a Gilded Time gelding, scored by 3 1/4 lengths over Meadow Vespers and favored Demagoguery, running the mile in 1:44.52.

On hand to present the trophy to owner Jerry Campbell, of the Volar Corporation, was Chicagoan Jim Trew, the grandson of Bill Dowling, for whom the race is named. Dowling, a horseman, entrepreneur, and politician, was a major player in getting the Racing Act of 1933 passed by the Michigan legislature, legalizing parimutuel wagering in the state.

Dowling is considered the father of Michigan horse racing by many in the business. He was named the deputy commissioner of the racing commission in 1933 and served with the commission through his retirement in 1952, serving as head commissioner from 1943 until 1946.

Its His Time was second to Demagoguery in the Spartan Stakes last month after nine months away from the races, and followed that up with a handy allowance win. The Dowling was his fourth career win and second stakes victory.
