Great Lakes Downs track report

MUSKEGON, Mich. - Freddie Mata just had one of the best weeks of his career, but will have to wait several weeks to have another. The Great Lakes Downs jockey was injured in a training accident Tuesday morning and will be on the sidelines for an undetermined amount of time.

Mata cracked a bone in his ankle when a juvenile flipped with him while schooling at the gate. He attended Tuesday evening's races complete with cast and crutches.

"I got tired of winning all the races," he joked.

Mata was not winning all the races - but he had scored with 25 percent of his mounts. He won 12 races in his last three days of riding, including both stakes races that were run.

Last Friday, Charlies Indian was one of Mata's five winners. Trained by Ronnie Allen, Charlies Indian was a four-length winner in the $40,000 Larkspur Handicap. Mata and Allen teamed up again on Saturday to win the $40,000 Wolverine Stakes by the same margin with Above the Wind. Both were favorites.

Mata leads the jockey standings with 49 victories. Terry Houghton is in second with 37.
