ARCADIA, Calif. – Grand Slam Smile, the near-millionaire Cal-bred mare trained by Sean McCarthy, will point to a sprint stakes at Los Alamitos in an attempt to reach seven figures.
McCarthy said the Grade 2, $200,000 Great Lady M. Stakes, a 6 1/2-furlong sprint on July 4, is the target for Grand Slam Smile, a 12-time winner of $984,120 from 21 starts. Grand Slam Smile has won 10 stakes.
“She’s doing well. She’ll work this weekend,” McCarthy said early this week. “We’ll nominate her to the Great Lady M. and see where we go from there.”
Grand Slam Smile is owned by breeders Larry and Marianne Williams. In her most recent start on May 23 at Santa Anita, the 5-year-old led gate to wire in the $100,000 Fran’s Valentine at a mile on turf.
◗ Trainers Bob Baffert and Phil D’Amato start their first 2-year-olds of the season Friday in race 4, a maiden race at five furlongs. Baffert entered Nayar, a Tiz the Law colt with fast works and a short price – even money – on the morning line. D’Amato entered 5-2 second choice Clear and Present, by first-crop sire Jack Christopher. Clear and Present has trained exceptionally well and could upset the six-runner field.
