Grand River: Battle Of Waterloo, Battle Of The Belles take place during Industry Day card

As part of their Industry Day program on Monday afternoon, Grand River Raceway hosted the C$205,000 Battle Of Waterloo and the C$165,000 Battle Of The Belles for Ontario-sired 2-year-old pacers of both sexes.

In the Battle Of Waterloo for colts and geldings, C Script (Doug McNair), the 1-5 favorite, crossed the wire first by half a length in 1:52 3/5 after he led through fractions of 26 3/5, 56 2/5 and 1:24 3/5, then held off an attack by pocket-sitter Gogo Gadget (Jonathan Drury) in the lane. However, after a lengthy inquiry, it was determined that C Script had gone inside three consecutive pylons on the far turn, and therefore he was demoted to last. That elevated Gogo Gadget to the win, followed by 136-1 shot Slick Draw (Steven Hudon) and No More Exs (Travis Henry).

"He just keeps digging. He's only a little fella and every time that I've had a chance to sit behind him he's got just a touch better," Drury said. "I didn't think the two-hole trip behind Dougie was really ideal because he was going to be able to steal away with the race and turn it into a sprint like we did. My guy's a little bit beter if I could've got first-up earlier and looked him in the eye, but it worked out. You don't like to take a win that way but my colt deserved it, too.

A Betting Line colt bred by Jessica Kulcher, Gogo Gadget is trained by Kyle Bossence for owner Tamara Vandewiel. Gogo Gadget has won all four of his starts, has earned C$212,500 and paid $7.80 to win.

"He's done nothing wrong so far. He's just a gentleman," Bossence remarked. "He always had a really quick snap off a helmet (training down). The only thing I was a little bit worried about was his size. I just didn't know how long or how fast he'd be able to go with the size."

The complexion of the Battle Of The Belles for the fillies changed on the first turn when 1-5 choice Money Carlo (James MacDonald) went off-stride. With Money Carlo out of the picture, second choice Jersey Bulldog (Bob McClure) took control past the 27 second opening quarter and kept it to the half in 55 1/5 and the three-quarters in 1:22 4/5. Jersey Bulldog remained in a one-horse race to the wire as she continued to widen her margin to 7 3/4 lengths over Cattle Belle (Trevor Henry) in a 1:51 3/5 mile, with Lyons Flurry (Mark MacDonald) back in third.

"I figured that Money Carlo would work her way to the front and it would just be a battle," McClure, who picked Jersey Bulldog over Money Carlo after he swept the eliminations with the pair. "It'd be two great fillies going head-to-head. It's not the way I wanted to win. I would have liked it straight up, but 2-year-old racing, that stuff happens."

Bred by Mark Mullen and Dr. Stephen Dey III, Jersey Bulldog is co-owned by trainer John Pentland along with Sherri Sumner, Jack Darling Stables Ltd. and Alan Alber. She has three wins and a second from five outings, has banked C$127,000 and returned $7 to win.
