Grammy Girl picked up her third straight stakes victory in the Grade 3 Vagrancy on Sunday at Aqueduct. The 5-year-old mare, once a steady allowance contender, has improved into a wholly more dangerous runner and secured the first half of a 1-2 stakes finish for trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. In her 2026 debut at Aqueduct last month, jockey Javier Castellano rode her to a 1 1/2-length victory in the Grade 3 Distaff. He won with another stalking trip on Sunday. “I like that she broke out of the gate sharp and she was able to cover up a little bit, settle behind the horses,” Castellano said. “I like it when you can put her outside and make that run.” Mystic Lake, an 11-time stakes winner, also ran a strong race for Joseph, bouncing back from a distant finish in the Grade 1 Madison at Keeneland. But despite staying closer to the early lead under Flavien Prat, she could not hold off her stablemate in a 1 1/4-length defeat. :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! Kappa Kappa, who won the Grade 2 Raven Run on the front end at Keeneland last year, scratched from the Vagrancy, leaving 18-1 longshot My Magic Wand to take the early lead in the 6 1/2-furlong race. She completed the opening quarter-mile in 22.33 seconds. The Gregory Sacco trainee stuck around on the far turn and ran the half-mile in 45.64, but she ultimately proved to be the perfect target for several stalking contenders. With the Angels, the 9-5 favorite trained by Linda Rice, was stuck behind horses turning for home, which allowed the Joseph runners to swing from outside paths with all the momentum. Mystic Lake sat in second all the way, but before she could spring into command, Grammy Girl advanced from third and stuck a head in front at the top of the stretch. Castellano had more work to do than he did in the Distaff, but he may have had more horse under him, too. “She’s turned around really good lately,” Castellano said. “She’s doing super, seems to me she’s getting better and better.” With a powerful late kick, Grammy Girl put away Mystic Lake in midstretch, finishing the job and paying $9.48 to win. She completed the 6 1/2-furlong sprint in 1:16.64 (89 Beyer Speed Figure). A 1-2 finish in the Vagrancy capped off a stellar weekend for Joseph, who won seven races at five different tracks Saturday. The trainer also secured a 1-2 finish in last year’s Vagrancy with Haulin Ice and R Disaster. “The Vagrancy has been very good to us — we were 1-2 last year as well,” Joseph said, per the New York Racing Association.  “We like the Vagrancy.” Joseph also told the NYRA he would send Mystic Lake back to Lone Star Park for the Memorial Day Sprint on May 25, a race she won by two lengths last year. Grammy Girl will stay in New York, but the trainer has not landed on a next start. Praying, who was also seeking a bounce-back performance for trainer Robert Medina, closed from fifth to take third, a length behind Mystic Lake. It was her first finish in the money since Oct. 4, when she won the Grade 2 Thoroughbred Club of America at Keeneland. With the Angels, the winner of the $125,000 Correction for Linda Rice last time out, had to settle for fourth after struggling to find running room. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
