OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Midnight Stroll, the Grade 3 Delaware Oaks winner of 2022, suffered an apparent cardiovascular event that caused an instant death at the end of a gallop over the Belmont Park training track on Wednesday, trainer John Terranova said.
Terranova was training Midnight Stroll to a possible start in the Inside Information Stakes on Jan. 27 at Gulfstream Park.
“That filly was absolutely blossoming,” Terranova said. “It’s a big blow. That was the queen of the barn. I feel bad for everybody in the barn and all her owners.”
Midnight Stroll, a daughter of Not This Time, was owned by Morplay Racing LLC and Medallion Racing. She was purchased for $225,000 at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. auction in October 2020.
Midnight Stroll had a record of 4-1-2 from 14 starts and earnings of $447,142. In addition to the Delaware Oaks, Midnight Stroll won the Sophomore Fillies Stakes at Tampa in March 2022. Last September, she finished second in the Grade 2 Presque Isle Masters. In her last start, she finished 12th in the Grade 2 Bessarabian Stakes on Nov. 11 at Woodbine.
