Debra A. Roma After finishing 16th in the Kentucky Derby, Intrepido will get a break, according to trainer Jeff Mullins.

Intrepido, winner of the Grade 1 American Pharoah Stakes at Santa Anita last September, will be turned out at a central California farm in coming days after finishing 16th of 18 in the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs last Saturday.

“He’s getting ready to go to the farm,” trainer Jeff Mullins said on Thursday morning.

Mullins did not specify how long Intrepido will be rested. The colt returned to Mullins’s stable at Santa Anita earlier this week and will soon be sent to Kingfisher Farm in Solvang, Mullins said.

“We want to let him settle,” Mullins said.

Intrepido was a 52-1 outsider in the Kentucky Derby. He was 12th for the first mile and was not a factor in the last half-mile, finishing 33 1/2 lengths behind Golden Tempo.

Owned by Dutch Girl Holdings and Irving Ventures, Intrepido has won 2 of 7 starts and earned $342,800. He won the American Pharoah Stakes in his third start, and has been beaten in stakes in his last four races, including a fifth-place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Del Mar last October.

Earlier this year, Intrepido finished second in the Grade 3 Robert Lewis Stakes at a mile at Santa Anita in February and fourth by 10 lengths behind So Happy in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby on April 4.

The Mullins-trained Queen Maxima does not have an immediate race target after finishing fourth by three lengths in the Grade 2 Unbridled Sidney Stakes at 5 1/2 furlongs on turf at Churchill Downs on May 1.

Queen Maxima, owned by Dutch Girl Holdings and Irving Ventures, won the 2025 Unbridled Sidney Stakes, one of her five stakes wins in the last 15 months.

The next turf sprint stakes for fillies and mares in Southern California is the $100,000 Daisycutter Stakes at five furlongs at Del Mar on July 25.
