Hit the Road, winner of the Grade 1 Frank Kilroe Mile in 2021 and three other stakes, has been retired from racing and will enter stud later this year in South Africa, trainer Dan Blacker announced on social media earlier this week.
A 7-year-old by More than Ready, Hit the Road won 6 of 19 starts and earned $608,751 for the partnership of DK Racing, Blacker’s Radley Equine, Taste of Victory Stables, Rick Gold, Tony Maslowski, and Dave Odmark.
Hit the Road finished sixth in the restricted Lure Stakes at Santa Anita last October in what would be his final start. The 2021 Kilroe was his final win. Later that year, Hit the Road was third in the Grade 2 Del Mar Mile and Grade 2 City of Hope Mile.
Hit the Road was entered in 2021 Breeders’ Cup Mile at Del Mar, but was withdrawn because of a fever, Blacker said at the time.
Hit the Road won three other one-mile turf races - the Zuma Beach Stakes for 2-year-olds at Santa Anita in 2019, the restricted Oceanside Stakes for 3-year-olds at Del Mar in 2020, and the Grade 3 Thunder Road Stakes at Santa Anita in 2021.
