Grade 1-placed Reinvestment Risk heads allowance

Deb Roma Reinvestment Risk, second in the Grade 1 Carter last year, was bought in January for $70,000 at a Keeneland sale.

On April 9, 2022, Reinvestment Risk finished second behind Speaker’s Corner in the Grade 1 Carter Stakes at Aqueduct. On April 6, 2023, Reinvestment Risk is set to face nine rivals in the featured seventh race at Hawthorne, a multiple-conditions allowance sprint with a $40,000 claiming option.

Owned by Klaravich Stables and trained by Chad Brown last year, Reinvestment Risk went from the Carter to finish second behind Jackie’s Warrior in the Grade 1 Churchill Downs on May 7. He ran again, to no great effect, July 16 at Saratoga, and his next appearance on the public stage came this past January in Keeneland’s Horses of All Ages sale, where William Nicks purchased Reinvestment Risk for $70,000.

Nicks now is listed as part of the ownership group, and Reinvestment Risk has moved to the Horseshoe Indianapolis barn of trainer Randy Klopp. Awaiting the start of the 2023 racing season there, Klopp has run a handful of horses at Hawthorne, going 1-2-0 from eight starters. Reinvestment Risk shows four workouts and drew post 10. He’s listed at 9-2 on the track’s morning line, and if that’s the correct price, Reinvestment Risk will be cold on the board.

Carded for six furlongs, the featured seventh has two allowance conditions that don’t usually go together: non-winners of two races other than maiden, claiming or starter, and non-winners of four races, period. The only entrants who would benefit from the race being written for non-winners of four rather than the natural non-winners of three are entered under the claiming option.

Golden Hornet seemed like a good horse to play against as the 3-5 favorite in a race at this level on March 12, and, indeed, he finished third after breaking somewhat flat from his rail draw in a five-furlong contest over a sloppy track. Golden Hornet has a better post Thursday and an established baseline to make him a strong contender – provided Reinvestment Risk doesn’t come back sharp.

Race 7 is part of a very playable late pick-four sequence that includes 52 entrants, with 14 entered in race 6, a first-level allowance. Hawthorne offers 12 percent takeout on straight bets.
