OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Gozilla was one of the more impressive 2-year-old maiden winners of the 2019 Saratoga meet. There ends the highlight of his career thus far. Sunday, Gozilla begins a second attempt at starting over when he runs in a first-level allowance at Aqueduct, one of three such races sprinkled throughout the nine-race program. Gozilla debuted on Aug. 10, 2019 and rolled to a 4 1/2-length win while running six furlongs in 1:09.59 for trainer Steve Asmussen and owner Ahmed Zayat. Gary Barber bought into the colt after that victory. After a third in the Hopeful and a fourth in the Champagne, Gozilla went to the sidelines. He didn’t return until last July at Keeneland where he finished last of eight as the 4-5 favorite in a first-level allowance. Following two subsequent works in August at Saratoga, Gozilla went to the farm. In November, Gozilla went through the sales ring and Barber bought the horse for $60,000. He is now the sole owner of the colt, who is now trained by Mark Casse. “When he broke his maiden he looked like he could be any kind,” Casse said. “His Hopeful was okay and his Champagne was okay. Something went haywire somewhere.” Gozilla has worked five times at Casse’s training center in Ocala, Fla., before being shipped up north. “He’s pretty fit,” Casse said. If he still has any of the speed he did as a 2-year-old, Gozilla could be hard to catch under Kendrick Carmouche in the 6 1/2-furlong race, which goes as race 5. Runningwscissors tore through his New York-bred conditions easily in November and December, and finished third behind Our Last Buck and Funny Guy in the Say Florida Sandy Stakes. He is likely a forward presence under Dylan Davis. O’Trouble comes in off a maiden win for trainer Tony Dutrow. Abuelo Paps ships up from the Mid-Atlantic region for trainer Marco Salazar with form that suggests he can get into the exacta or trifecta. Rejected Again, another potential forward factor, and Manolito complete the field. In race 8, a first-level allowance for 4-year-olds and up, Obsessed looks like the horse to catch for trainer Todd Pletcher. Obsessed is coming off two second-place finishes in this same condition, one behind the improving Tenderfoot, the other behind the New York-bred stakes winner Chestertown. Obsessed breaks from the rail under Davis. Doubly Blessed seeks his third consecutive victory on dirt after making the first seven starts of his career on turf. Both of his wins have come at a one-turn mile, the configuration of this race. Daddy Knows, Malibu Star, Lost in Rome, Frosted Ice, Family Biz, and El Hermano complete the field. Race 2 is a first-level allowance for New York-bred 3-year-olds where Storm Shooter looks to improve on his second-place finish in the Rego Park Stakes on Jan. 10. He gets Lasix for the first time.
