Goulding: Woodbine late pick four for Sunday, Sept. 16, 2018
The late pick four at Woodbine on Sunday starts on race 8, where (6) Gwendoline H can be singled in the six-furlong dash for fillies and mares. The 5-year-old daughter of Archarcharch is coming off a sharp win on turf in her first start for leading trainer Norman McKnight who claimed her for $32,000 on July 11.
Over the past five years, McKnight has a 28 percent strike rate with horses making their second start off the claim, so she should come back with another solid effort. She is a five-time winner on Tapeta, so the surface switch shouldn’t be an issue.
The second leg in the sequence is the Grade 1, $250,000 Summer for 2-year-olds going a mile on turf. The Chad Brown-trained (3) Fog of War is clearly the one to beat. The War Front colt rallied to win a key maiden special weight race when he debuted going 5 1/2 furlongs at Saratoga on Aug. 13. He is out of a Group 3 winner in Ireland who won her maiden going 1 1/2 miles, so he should love the added distance.
His lone sibling is a 3-year-old who won his debut going a mile at Newmarket on July 12. Fog of War could be singled, but he is a 2-year-old shipping to run over a new surface. (12) Jungle Warrior was impressive in winning his debut and has worked well since. (11) Tricky Magician and (9) Nashtrick will also be included in the ticket.
In the third leg, (2) Distinct Passion is taking a huge drop and should be favored in the $10K claimer for nonwinners of two. (6) Rock You won’t mind the move back to a sprint and could be dangerous with the hot apprentice Kazushi Kimura riding. (8) Wall Street Wolf should be prominent throughout while moving back to the surface that his lone win came on.
The last leg is a wide-open event. My top pick is (8) Silent Emissary, who figures to move forward in his second try on turf while making his second start following a layoff. Also using (2) Rockbarton, (4) Fritzie’s Boy, (5) Walkabout Creek, and (7) Harper P M.
Here is the ticket: 6 / 3,9,11,12 / 2,6,8 / 2,4,5,7,8.
The cost for a $1 ticket is $60. There is also a 20-cent option.
