Goulding: Woodbine late pick four play for Saturday, Sept. 14, 2019
The Late pick four at Woodbine has a $350,000 guaranteed pool and a ticket can be built around Got Stormy in the Grade 1, $1 million Woodbine Mile. The Mile goes as race 9 and is the first leg in the sequence.
RACE 9: GOT STORMY (5) was coming back in a week when she set the record for a mile on turf at Saratoga in the Fourstardave on Aug. 10, and she came back with three solid interim works, so not expecting her to bounce. She also won over this surface, which is a big plus. She is facing boys, but she beat males in the Fourstardave and Casse is starting to compare her to Tepin, who improved dramatically as a 4-year-old. The multiple Grade 1 winner won this race for Casse in 2016 following a win in the Group 1 Queen Anne at Ascot.

RACE 10: OLD PERSIAN (1), who won the $6 million Dubai Sheema Classic at Meyda in March, is clearly the horse to beat. However, he will be running in North America for the first time so he might be vulnerable. His trainer came close to winning this race in 2017 with the favorite, Hawkbill, so expecting a strong effort from Old Persian. FOCUS GROUP (3), trained by Chad Brown, has two wins and a runner-up finish at the distance. SIR SAHIB (5) couldn’t catch TIZ A SLAM (6) in his last two but should get some help up front with Cooler Mike in the field. Tiz a Slam is on a roll and could be gone if he gets away on his own
1, 3, 5, 6
RACE 11: In a scramble we are going deep with COMBATIVE (1) who looked good breaking his maiden in just his third start. GET THE NEWS (3) romped in a $40K maiden and was taken by Drexler who has strong numbers with claimed horses running back the first time. JUNGLE WARRIOR (5) ran like a horse who needed a race and he will appreciate being back on firm turf. D MAGICIAN (9), who won the only time he tried grass, has been working well leading up to his first start this year. DETROIT STEEL (11) could turn things around with the blinkers going back on. CRAWL FROM THE BAR (12) was overmatched in the $100K Ontario Club on Tapeta and will appreciate the class relief and being back to turf.
1, 3, 5, 9, 11, 12
Race 12: CLASSIC BEAUTY (8) is the top pick. She showed speed in her first try on turf this year and was haltered by McKnight who the past couple of years has a 32 percent strike rate and $2.29 ROI with claimed horses running back the first time. STOKES (1) finished second coming off a layoff in a pricier maiden claimer. PLAYING SMART (3) may not have cared for the yielding track in the same race Stokes exits. With a better trip in her last start CLAIRESSENCE (10) would not be eligible for this race.
