Goulding: Santa Anita late pick four for Saturday, May 11, 2019
Ce Ce looks like a horse with a bright future and can be used as a single in the late pick four at Santa Anita on Saturday. Here’s a look at the sequence.
Race 6: (3) Ce Ce couldn’t have been more impressive winning her debut in a key race for trainer Michael McCarthy. The daughter of Elusive Quality easily handled 3-5 favorite Honeyfromthesouth, who finished more than eight lengths clear of the third-place finisher. She looks like a standout single.
Race 7: The water is a little deeper here. (4) North County Guy and (8) Foray are both coming off strong performances and figure to be in the mix early. (1) Acclimate, who finished fifth as the chalk in North County Guy’s race, figures to move forward in his second start back. (2) Chosen Vessel, third in the same race, should be rolling late, as will (5) Erotic. (6) Quick Finish, blinkers off, could be dangerous while stretching out to a middle distance for the first time.
Race 8: (3) A strong case could be made for singling (3) Calexman, the only horse who isn’t coming off a long layoff, and the one they may have to run down if he breaks alertly. His third-place finish in an $80K optional claimer on Feb. 8 was enhanced when the runner-up came back to win the $101K Tiznow with a 101 Beyer Speed Figure. (5) Once on Whiskey returns for Bob Baffert, who we all know can have them ready to roll coming off a lengthy layoff. The Grade 3 winner will need some help up front and could get it from his stablemate, who is breaking from the rail.
Race 9: Hard to take a firm stand in this puzzling five-furlong maiden special weight race on turf. (7) Snappish is out of a mare who won a couple of races on turf, and his half-sister Masaya earned $300K, most of it coming from her win in the Tattersalls Millions Fillies at Newmarket. Snappish is trained by Leonard Powell, who can have then ready to roll first time, and at a price. (2) Babel and (3) Music to My Ears took support but didn’t fire in their debuts at Del Mar. Expecting improvement with the experience behind them. (1) Seeking Refuge ran okay in his only try in a turf sprint, and this came up pretty weak. (6) Irradiate has a solid set of works showing and could come out firing for Hall of Fame trainer Jerry Hollendorfer. (5) Rayray and (8) Gate Speed have been working well, but their trainer hasn’t had a lot of success with first-time starters – 4 for 89 over the past five years with horses debuting in MSW races. Taking a stand against.
Here’s the $1 ticket, which costs $50: 3 / 2,4,5,6,8 / 3,5 / 1,2,3,6,7
