Goulding: How I'll play Woodbine on Sunday, July 8
Excluding the $100,000 Shepperton, where 1-9 morning-line favorite Pink Lloyd likely will win his 12th straight stakes race, most of the races on the 11-race card at Woodbine on Sunday are wide-open events.
With a guaranteed pool of $100,000, the early pick four is always worth playing. It starts in race 4, where I will count on trainer Norman McKnight to get me through the first leg of the sequence. McKnight is winning races at the current meet at a 34 percent clip, and he seems to have the six-furlong dash for bottom-level maiden claimers surrounded with Wave Dancer and Still in Fashion.
Wave Dancer almost took them all the way going five furlongs in a similar race June 22. One of my favorite plays is blinkers off a speed horse, and that is what you get with Wave Dancer, who could be tough to run down if she breaks on top from post 2 with apprentice Daisuke Fukumoto riding.
Still in Fashion was the runner-up when she debuted in a $10,000 maiden claimer June 8, came back with a sharp work, and should get a nice trip stalking her stablemate with apprentice Kazushi Kimura aboard.
Race 5 is more complicated, especially with some of the 12 horses entered trying turf for the first time. Kissoffire likely will be favored. He just missed in his last two starts at the same level and won’t mind the move back to a sprint. The “all” button is probably the way to go, but I will cut it down and use Rockbarton, Foxy B, Berkeley Boy, Juan Stormy Night, Shot of Glory, and King of the Court.
I’ll use the two Mark Casse-trained 2-year-olds, Einstein’s Babe and Mahone Bay in race 6. Also on the ticket are Moksgmol, A Fox Inthe Forest, and, if she draws in from the also-eligible list, Carmen Is My Name.
I am tempted to single Hanalei Moon in race 7. She is the first foal out of the Grade 2 route winner Authenticity, and she was an easy winner going 6 1/2 furlongs in her first start on turf and first at Woodbine on June 9. However, facing winners for the first time is never easy, and she will be stretching out to nine furlongs. She is trained by Casse, who also has Curluck entered, and she could be dangerous running without blinkers for the first time.
Mexican Hat goes for the potent Catherine Day-Phillips/Eurico Da Silva combo. Sailors Thought and Brighter Ideas also will be included on the ticket.
