Goulding: How I'd play Woodbine for Saturday, Oct. 12, 2019
The late pick four is the play because it has a guaranteed pool of $200,000. The sequence begins in race 9 with the Grade 1 Canadian International. The condition of the outer turf course is yielding. The sun is out, though, so that could change.
Race 9: (1) Ziyad just missed in a Group 1 in France two back and won the Group 2 Grand Prix de Deauville in his last start on Aug. 25. He has a good record at the mile and a half distance and is clearly the one to beat. Hard to leave out (4) Desert Encounter, though. The classy 7-year-old won this race last year and is coming off three straight wins in Group 3’s in Great Britain.
Race 10: The seven and one-half furlong dash will stay on the inner turf course, which is currently rated firm. (1) Quality Heat is the one to beat in this first-level allowance race for 2-year-old fillies. Trained by Mark Casse, she improved when she moved to turf in her second start, and in her only race over this course she finished third in the $102,000 Woodbine Cares on Sept. 15. She should get a cozy trip breaking from the inside post. (3) Elite Song romped when she debuted on the main track in a $25,000 maiden claimer, and anything trained by Norman McKnight has to be respected. (4) Egyptian Nights, fifth in the Woodbine Cares, could improve with De Silva picking up the mount. (7) Lady Fatima got off to a rough start in the Woodbine Cares, and the only other time she ran on turf she won a maiden special weight race at Belmont.
Race 11: (4) King Ottokar just missed at this level and should be okay with the slightly shorter distance. (1) Noble Hope finished a length behind him and could turn the tables with the right kind of trip.
Race 12: Going deep, beginning with (12) Fashion Fortune, who had a rough trip in her debut and goes for a strong jockey-trainer combo. (8) Candy’s Dream improved when she moved back to main track in her latest. (2) Queen’s Speed finished well when she debuted in the same race Candy’s Dream exits. She should move forward with the experience behind her, and the added distance won’t hurt. (7) Anne of Cleves finished fifth in a key race in her debut and may have tipped her hand when she worked a sharp five furlongs on Oct. 5.
