Goulding: Del Mar pick three for Sunday, Aug. 16
Race 3: I am going to start my pick three with (2) CAMINETTO as my top pick. He only beat one horse, but it was still a good effort in the Grade 1 Bing Crosby, and he will certainly appreciate the class relief with the drop into this $62,500 optional-claiming race. (6) RAISED SECRET beat CAMINTTO prior to a failed effort in the one-mile Bertrando at Los Alamitos. (7) RED OUTLAW has been off since December but can fire fresh and likes to win races. We’ll also assume he will be able to handle running over dirt for the first time.
A’s: 2
B’s: 6, 7
Race 4: (4) TARIS is the one they will have to catch and could be long gone if she’s ready for a big effort coming off the bench. Trainer Simon Callaghan has solid numbers with horses coming off layoffs of 180 days or more, and TARIS may have been trying to tell us something when she worked a bullet five furlongs in 59.40 seconds here Aug. 2. If she comes up short, (5) BARUTA looks like the one who will pick up the pieces from a stalking position.
A’s: 4
B’s: 5
Race 5: This appears to be a wide-open event, and (8) UNUSUALY, who finished full of run from along the rail in his second start back, could be sitting on a big effort. (2) SIR CAL got too far behind in the same race and could make some noise with the blinkers going on. (4) CUSTODIAN won’t mind the move back to turf after finishing third in a key race where the winner and runner-up won their next stars with 94 and 81 Beyer Speed Figures. (5) DIABLO CABALLERO didn’t run that bad and may have bounced in the same race Unusualy and Sir Cal exit.
A’s: 2, 8
B’s: 4
C’s: 5
