Got Stormy's family to be well represented at Keeneland September

Nicole Russo|Aug 12, 2019
Got Stormy wins the 2019 Fourstardave at Saratoga Race Course
Barbara D. Livingston Got Stormy sets a course record winning the Fourstardave. Her half-brother by Super Saver is consigned to the Keeneland September Sale.

Got Stormy, who smashed a course record while defeating males in the Grade 1 Fourstardave Handicap on one week’s rest, represents one more feather in the cap of her late granddam, multiple graded stakes-producing broodmare Air France, who died last year. Got Stormy’s family will be prominently represented at next month’s Keeneland September yearling sale.

Air France, a homebred for Mount Joy Stables, won 2 of 11 starts before moving on to a successful career as a broodmare. Of the French Deputy mare’s 11 starters, nine won, led by Grade 2 winners Smooth Air and Overdriven. Smooth Air, by Smooth Jazz, became a millionaire with victories in the 2008 Ohio Derby and Hutcheson Stakes and 2009 Gulfstream Park Handicap. He placed in four other graded stakes, highlighted by two runner-up efforts in Grade 1 company – in the Florida Derby to eventual dual classic winner Big Brown and in the 2009 Metropolitan Handicap. Overdriven, by Tale of the Cat, won two of his three starts, highlighted by the Sanford Stakes.

Air France’s final two foals are an unnamed juvenile colt from the first crop of Triple Crown winner American Pharoah, and a Bernardini colt produced in May 2018. Air France, 19 at the time, was subsequently euthanized due to foaling complications. Her colt was placed on a nurse mare at Pope McLean’s Crestwood Farm, where the mare spent the majority of her career as a broodmare.

Super Phoebe, the dam of Got Stormy, is the second stakes-producing daughter of Air France. Another of her daughters, Air Guitar, is the dam of stakes winner Flying Falynn.

Super Phoebe, a Malabar Gold mare who won 9 of 22 career starts, is the dam of four winners from five starters to date. Before Got Stormy hit the scene, she was already represented by the stakes-placed Sky Gold, by Successful Appeal. Got Stormy, by Crestwood stallion Get Stormy, picked up her first Grade 1 victory in the Fourstardave, adding it to four other stakes victories, including the Grade 3 Ontario Colleen.

Coming in the pipeline for Super Phoebe are an unraced 3-year-old Munnings colt named Sir Alfred James; an unraced 2-year-old Animal Kingdom filly named Classy Kingdom; a yearling colt by Super Saver; and a colt from the first crop of Mohaymen, foaled in April. She was bred to first-year stallion Bolt d’Oro for the 2020 foaling season.

Crestwood Farm will consign both Air France’s final foal, her Bernardini colt, and Super Phoebe’s Super Saver colt to the Keeneland September yearling sale, as agent. Both are in Book 3 of the marathon sale.
