Got Stormy seeks third straight stakes win in Ontario Colleen

Got Stormy wins 2018 Wild Applause
Adam Coglianese/NYRA Got Stormy returned $5.40 with his victory in the Wild Applause on Saturday.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Got Stormy has gotten really good this summer, and the daughter of hot turf sire Get Stormy seeks her third consecutive stakes score in Saturday’s Grade 3, $125,000 Ontario Colleen at Woodbine.

Owned by Gary Barber and trained by Mark Casse, Got Stormy notched her first stakes win in the $200,000 Penn Oaks at a mile on June 2. Three weeks later at Belmont, she captured another one-mile stakes, the Wild Applause.

Got Stormy was based at Belmont before she worked an easy half-mile in 50.20 seconds on the Tapeta here last Saturday.

A field of eight 3-year-old fillies was drawn for the one-mile Ontario Colleen, including two Graham Motion-trained runners based in Maryland, Armoricaine and Peach of a Gal.

KEY CONTENDERS

Got Stormy, by Get Stormy
Last 3 Beyers: 88-90-89

◗ Woodbine’s leading trainer, Casse has won the Ontario Colleen twice, most recently with Enstone in 2017. Patrick Husbands rode Enstone and will ride Got Stormy.

Armoricaine, by Kendargent
Beyer: 78

◗ The French import was eighth in her North American debut in the Grade 3 Wonder Again Stakes at Belmont on June 7, when a tardy break hindered her chances, according to Motion.

“Things just didn’t go well,” Motion said. “She acted up in the gate and got off to a really bad start. Given that she’s now had some time to get adjusted and we’ve worked with her in the gate and what have you, I’m hoping we’ll see her true colors on Saturday. I think she’s very capable.”

Peach of a Gal, by Curlin
Last 3 Beyers: 77-59-71

◗ She won two of her last three outings, including the Christiana Stakes at Delaware. Two starts ago, she finished a distant third over very soft ground in the Hilltop Stakes at Pimlico.

“She’s been a filly who keeps improving,” Motion said. “I thought she beat a decent group last time at Delaware. She did it pretty nicely. This will be a step up for her into graded company, but I think she warrants being in there.”

Safe to Say, by Justin Phillip
Last 3 Beyers: 79-80-75

◗ The other Casse entrant, she is coming off a victory against Canadian-bred 3-year-old fillies in the $225,000 Bison City Stakes on the Tapeta. Her lone turf start was a third in a maiden special weight sprint on debut last July. She breezed five-eighths over the turf training course in 59.40 seconds on July 13, the second-fastest of 20 works at the distance that morning.

Fairy Hill, by Sligo Bay
Last 3 Beyers: 74-74-69

◗ Her dam was a stakes winner on turf, and this filly will be competing on that surface for the first time after beating Ontario-sired 3-year-old fillies in the Lady Angela Stakes.
