Got Stormy made 8-5 to beat the boys in Woodbine Mile

Got Stormy wins the 2019 Fourstardave at Saratoga Race Course
Barbara D. Livingston Got Stormy will try to follow this victory in the Grade 1 Fourstardave at Saratoga with a score in the Grade 1 Woodbine Mile on Saturday.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – The filly Got Stormy has been tabbed as the 8-5 morning-line favorite for the 23rd running of the $1 million Woodbine Mile on Saturday, when she will try to give trainer Mark Casse his third win in the Grade 1 fixture.

Got Stormy had a Saratoga to remember. A week after taking the De La Rose Stakes on Aug. 3, she beat the boys in course-record time in the Grade 1 Fourstardave, earning a 108 Beyer Speed Figure.

Casse won the 2016 Woodbine Mile with the brilliant mare Tepin. He said Got Stormy is nearly in the same ballpark as Tepin.

“I think you can start talking about her being on the exceptional side,” Casse said. “She still has a lot to do and to prove to be in the same league as Tepin, but she does seem to be on her way there.”

Tyler Gaffalione will break Got Stormy from post 5. She defeated 3-year-old fillies in her lone start here last summer, the Grade 3 Ontario Colleen.

Raging Bull is the 3-1 second choice under Joel Rosario. A stretch-runner trained by Chad Brown, Raging Bull won the Grade 1 Hollywood Derby for 3-year-olds last fall and is exiting a second in the one-mile Fourstardave.

Synchrony, victorious in the Grade 2 King Edward here in his last start June 29, is the 6-1 third choice. Flavien Prat will ride the Mike Stidham-trained 6-year-old.

Awesometank and Lucullan are both listed at 8-1 on the line.

Awesometank, a 4-year-old filly from England, was second to favored Sistercharlie in the Grade 1 Beverly D. at Arlington in August, her lone start on this side of the pond

“She ran a terrific race in Chicago,” trainer William Haggas said. “She took to the training really well. As soon as she got there, she loved being ponied on the track. She was relaxed and calm. I knew she was going to run well because she’d gone into the race well.”

After returning from an extended layoff, Lucullan won both of his outings in New York this summer, including the Lure Stakes at Saratoga. His trainer, Kiaran McLaughlin, captured the 2007 Woodbine Mile with Shakespeare.

At 15-1, Silent Poet is the lowest-priced local runner. Trained by Nick Gonzalez, he won the Grade 2 Play the King here Aug. 24 in course-record time for the seven furlongs.

Rounding out the 11-horse field are Made You Look (12-1), who was supplemented by Brown, El Tormenta (20-1), Emmaus (20-1), Admiralty Pier (30-1), and American Guru (30-1).

The Woodbine Mile is a Breeders’ Cup Win and You’re In qualifier for the BC Mile on Nov. 2 at Santa Anita.
