Goodwood: Nashwa heavy Nassau favorite
It’s wife versus husband in the Group 1 Nassau Stakes on Thursday at Glorious Goodwood.
Nashwa, the mount of Hollie Doyle, is heavily favored in the Nassau, a 1 1/4-mile race for fillies and mares, while second choice Lilac Road will be ridden by Doyle’s husband, Tom Marquand.
Four-year-old Lilac Garden, trained by William Haggas, tries Group 1 competition for the first time in her career and in so doing concedes nine pounds to 3-year-old filly Nashwa. Third in the 1 1/2-mile Oaks at Epsom, Nashwa returned to capture the Group 1 Prix de Diane, the French Oaks, over 1 5/16 miles last month at Chantilly.
The weight gap should be too much for the older horses to overcome and Nashwa’s fellow 3-year-old fillies aren’t as good as she. Concert Hall might be next in the pecking order and she was 1 1/4 lengths behind Nashwa at Epsom and just fourth last out in the Belmont Oaks.

Goodwood Cup: Kyprios holds off troubled Stradivarius
Kyprios, a rising force in the staying ranks, edged legendary Stradivarius by a neck Tuesday in a thrilling renewal of the two-mile Goodwood Cup on the first day of Glorious Goodwood.
Stradivarius and jockey Andrea Atzeni encountered two serious bouts of traffic in the last three furlongs but still rallied stoutly inside Kyrprios to make this a very close finish. Trueshan, head and head with Kyprios a half-furlong out, finished third.
Four-year-old Kyprios, by Galileo out of Polished Gem, was ridden by Ryan Moore for trainer Aidan O’Brien and his owner, Moyglare Stud. Kyprios is headed for the Irish St. Leger over 1 3/4 miles. Stradivarius was seeking his fifth Goodwood Cup victory.
