SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – A drop in class and turn back in distance helped Goodall bounce back from a disappointing performance in the Grade 2 Eight Belles with a 2 3/4-length victory over the pacesetting Carmel Coast Thursday at Saratoga in the $175,000 Jersey Girl Stakes. Goodall went postward as the 5-2 second choice making her graded stakes debut in the Eight Belles coming off a well graded and one-sided victory in the Purple Martin Stakes at Oaklawn Park six weeks earlier. She was unable to duplicate that performance, racing forwardly for five furlongs before finishing a tiring fifth, nine lengths behind One Time Girl, stretching to seven furlongs for the first time in the Eight Belles. But Goodall looked every bit as good as she did in the Purple Martin when returning against ungraded company and shortening up to six furlongs for the Jersey Girl. Stalking the speedy Carmel Coast after breaking alertly under jockey Flavien Prat, she engaged the leader approaching the furlong marker and gradually edged well clear at the end. :: DRF Belmont Stakes Packages: Save big on PPs, Clocker Reports, Betting Strategies, and more. Carmel Coast stumbled briefly at the start and rushed up the rail to control the pace, but she proved no match for the winner through the final furlong. Mythical, the 6-5 favorite, was reserved within easy striking distance of the early leaders and swung five-wide while moving to closer contention into the stretch, but she failed to kick on and finished third, a head back of Carmel Coast. Goodall is trained by Steve Asmussen for Spendthrift Farm LLC. She completed the distance over a fast track in 1:08.78 and paid $10.26 as the fourth choice in a field of six 3-year-old fillies.  “To tell the truth, I think you can just draw a line through her last race. I thought it was just too poor to be true,” said Prat, who was aboard Goodall for the first time in the Eight Belles. “She was acting super today and she showed her true self. She broke well. Obviously, if somebody was faster than me, I was okay to sit. And when I asked her, she responded.” :: Get an edge with DRF Clocker Reports straight from the morning workouts.
