Good Governance, Emaraaty give Brown two good shots in turf allowance

Ronnie Betor Good Governance is 5 years old, but has made only four starts.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Trainer Chad Brown won three of the four turf races run to begin the Aqueduct spring meet and he has a good chance to add to that total in Friday’s second-level allowance feature, scheduled for 1 1/16 miles on the inner turf course.

Brown sends out the uncoupled pair of Good Governance and Emaraaty, both coming off a layoff, in the $84,000 race.

“They both at one point had my attention for perusing the stakes calendar,” Brown said. “Both horses had some trouble. We gave them the time they needed; both horses look sound now. It looks like a nice spot to start. Just very happy to be back in New York on fresh turf with nice purses.”

Good Governance, a 5-year-old son of Kingman, has two wins and two stakes placings from just four career starts. He has not run since finishing third behind Somelikeithotbrown in the Grade 2 Bernard Baruch Handicap on July 26 at Saratoga.

Good Governance won at first asking in summer 2019 and won a first-level allowance race off a 10-month layoff last June.

“I purposely waited for a little kinder turf course to run him on, given the different injuries he’s had in the past,” Brown said. “I don’t think over a rock-hard turf at Gulfstream he would have fared too well exiting a race. He’s been training like a timepiece every week. Hopefully, he’ll have a little consistency to his schedule and we can watch him run a little more this year.”

Good Governance is owned by Seth Klarman’s Klaravich Stables, which also has Price Talk entered in this spot with trainer Jorge Abreu. Price Talk is expected to scratch to run in Saturday’s $100,000 Danger’s Hour Stakes, Abreu said Thursday.

Brown trains Emaraaty for Shadwell Stable. Emaraaty, a 6-year-old son of Dubawi, came off a 15-month layoff to run third in an allowance race on Jan. 23 at Gulfstream. Buried inside for a good part of the trip, Emaraaty was a bit hesitant at first when room opened up, but he did come through to be beaten less than a length.

“He did have some room,” Brown said. “Not every horse wants to go through the inside. We got a race into him. He’s got some recency. I think this horse has quality and is going to have a good season. He’ll appreciate the ground at Aqueduct a lot more than Gulfstream.”

Todd Pletcher sends out Winters Back, who finished in front of Emaraaty in that Jan. 23 allowance and then came back to run fourth in the Grade 3 Canadian Turf at Gulfstream after making the lead in midstretch.

“He might have got there a little too soon,” Pletcher said.

Winters Back went 2 for 2 at Aqueduct last fall. Both wins came with Kendrick Carmouche up and Carmouche is aboard Friday.

Bodecream was beaten a nose by City Man in the Gio Ponti Stakes here on Nov. 27 and then was beaten a half-length in the Woodchopper at Fair Grounds to complete his 2020 campaign. On Feb. 27, he finished a late-running fourth in a Gulfstream allowance behind the repeat winner Sayyaaf.
