Gonzalez must sit out one additional day
ARCADIA, Calif.- Leading jockey Santiago Gonzalez will serve an additional one-day suspension on Feb. 6 for riding more than one designated race on Saturday’s California Cup program.
Riders are allowed to ride in one designated race – graded stakes and California Cup stakes at the current winter-spring meeting - during routine suspensions. Gonzalez rode all five of the Cal Cup stakes.
Gonzalez was given a three-day suspension last Friday through Sunday for causing interference in the third race on Jan. 22. Through Sunday, Gonzalez had 23 wins, two more than Rafael Bejarano.
Jockey Tiago Pereira will be suspended on Feb. 6 for riding in a designated race outside of California on Saturday, finishing ninth in the Grade 3 John Connally Turf Cup at Sam Houston Race Park on Going Somewhere.
California jockeys who ride designated races outside of the state must serve an additional day of suspension for riding in another jurisdiction during the penalty period.
