Edwin Gonzalez has not only been the dominant force in the local jockey colony since the beginning of the current session, he also has proven quite successful on the national stage of late.
The veteran Gonzalez, a 35-year-old native of Puerto Rico who has registered more than 2,200 career victories, has won with an eye-catching 14 of 31 mounts at the meet, including both overnight handicaps, the Miami Mile aboard Neat and the Palm Bay with Stick Talk, here last weekend. The previous week, Gonzalez journeyed to Santa Anita, where he won the Grade 1 Goodwood Stakes with Forged Steel, earning his mount an automatic berth in the Breeders’ Cup Classic.
Forged Steel is one of two horses Gonzalez, who began his riding career at Calder Racecourse in 2009, will ride in the Breeders’ Cup. He also is the jockey for Kerry’s Kiss, who he has guided to three consecutive local stakes tallies, including the Grade 3 Princess Rooney, an automatic qualifier for the Filly and Mare Sprint. Both Forged Steel and Kerry’s Kiss are trained by Saffie Joseph Jr.
“Saffie has always given me opportunities. I have two horses for the Breeders’ Cup this year. I’m blessed,” Gonzalez said.
