ARCADIA, Calif. – Since she returned to racing in the summer, Toinette has won two of three starts and her loss came to horses who have won or performed well in Grade 1 races. Toinette could race in a Grade 1 herself soon, pending the outcome of Sunday’s Grade 2, $200,000 Goldikova Stakes for fillies and mares at a mile on turf at Santa Anita. If she runs well, Toinette could run next in the Grade 1 Matriarch Stakes at a mile on turf at Del Mar on Dec. 1. Trained by Neil Drysdale for Ken Baca and Joseph and Lynne Hudson, Toinette won her 2019 debut in an allowance race with a $100,000 claiming option at Del Mar on Aug. 7, and was third behind Vasilika and Juliet Foxtrot in the Grade 2 John Mabee Stakes there on Aug. 31. Last month, Toinette won the restricted Swingtime Stakes at a mile on turf here. “She’s coming into the race well,” Drysdale said. “She had a nice prep.” Vasilika was entered in Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf. Juliet Foxtrot was second in the Grade 1 First Lady Stakes at Keeneland on Oct. 5. Toinette, who typically races as a stalker, is part of a field of seven in the Goldikova, the feature race on the final day of the autumn meeting. Del Mar begins opens Friday. Sunday’s program at Santa Anita includes a mandatory payout in the 20-cent Rainbow pick six, which begins the day with a carryover of $436,836 from Thursday. Toinette will be ridden by Flavien Prat, who was aboard for the optional claimer in August and four races last year, including Grade 3 stakes wins at Churchill Downs and here. Toinette should get a favorable trip on Sunday behind expected pacesetter Ms Bad Behavior. “Things have to go her way,” Drysdale said. Ms Bad Behavior won the Grade 3 Kentucky Downs Ladies Turf at a mile on Sept. 7 in her first start in four months, and was 10th of 13 in the First Lady Stakes, won by Uni. She faded from contention through the stretch after setting a quick pace. “She broke from 13 and she got hooked the whole way,” trainer Richard Baltas aid. “She wasn’t going to beat Uni, who was too sharp.” Baltas expects jockey Drayden Van Dyke to have Ms Bad Behavior prominent from the start. “She’s the type that puts herself into the race,” Baltas said. “She’s been doing good since she came off the layoff.” The Goldikova field includes two shippers – Coach Rocks, who is trained in Kentucky by Dale Romans, and Richmond Avenue, trained by Andre Fabre in France. Coach Rocks won an allowance race with an $80,000 claiming option at a mile at Churchill Downs on Sept. 27. She is best known for winning the Grade 2 Gulfstream Park Oaks in 2018. Richmond Avenue finished second and third in minor stakes at Newmarket Racecourse in England and Longchamp Racecourse in Paris in her last two starts. She has only one win in nine starts. Drysdale also starts Simply Breathless, who won the Grade 3 Wilshire Stakes here in June, but has lost her last three starts, which came in Illinois, Kentucky and New York.
