Goldfeder: How I'd play Del Mar for Friday, Aug. 14

I’m going with a simple approach and focus my Del Mar play for Friday on two races where I think I will have the opportunity to build my bankroll as I continue to attack the meet.

Race 1
(2) Pefiolo (ML 2-1): Chased front-runners around track in last and when the winner got away in the stretch he was the only other horse with any late run. Will benefit from the stretch out to 1 1/16 miles and should be able to sit a good trip just behind the speed horses.

(4) Doyouknowsomething (ML 7-2): Drops in class and stretches out. Broke maiden at a mile and should be a pace factor. Best chance will be if he can get loose. An exotics contender for sure.

(5) Warren’s Wesley (ML 5-2): Showed some run in lone dirt route earlier in the year and then after a layoff came back to run in a 6 furlong sprint followed by 2 turf routes. Despite no wins he maintained consistent form while posting Beyer’s between 71-74. Drops to a level where he should be competitive.

(7) Ten Carat Rock (ML 8-1): Seemed to break through on June 4 when he ran a good 2nd in his 1st attempt routing on dirt, finishing ahead of today’s likely favorite Pefiolo. Followed that up with a turf effort where he was probably in over his head and then when back on dirt chased a slow pace with little chance to make up any ground in the stretch. Would not be surprised to see him at 10-1 or higher.

The play

(2) Pefiolo to win at 2-1 or better
Exacta: 2/4-5-7 and reverse for half
Trifecta: 2/4-5-7/4-5-7

Race 3

(4) Curlin’s Fox (ML 4-1): Seems to run best when fresh and comes back after a moderate layoff sporting a good workout pattern. She may be best sprinting around 1 turn but she did run a respectable 2nd going a mile in her 2nd start. Her dull last effort in the Senorita, when she may have bled, may help her price. I’m not quite ready to give up on this well-bred filly who very well could go off the 3rd choice in the wagering.

(6) Spirit of Xian (ML 5-2): She will take them around as far as she can go as she is the clear speed in a small field of 6. Drop in class should help.

The play

(4) Curlin’s Fox to win at 5-2 or better.
Exacta box: 4-6
