Goldencents likely for Bing Crosby

ARCADIA, Calif. – Goldencents, second in the $1,250,000 Metropolitan Handicap at Belmont Park on June 7, will have a summer and fall campaign geared toward sprints and one-mile races, co-owner Glenn Sorgenstein said Thursday.
A four-time stakes winner, Goldencents is likely to return to racing in the $300,000 Bing Crosby Stakes over six furlongs at Del Mar on July 27, followed by a potential trip to Saratoga for the $500,000 Forego Stakes over seven furlongs Aug. 30.
“Those are two races we’ve earmarked,” Sorgenstein said. “After the Forego, we want to run something in between [before the Breeders’ Cup]. The final race would be the Breeders’ Cup Mile or Sprint, depending on how he performs up to the Breeders’ Cup.
“If he runs strongly in the Forego, we’d like to gear up to the Mile race. We don’t want to ship around too much.”
A 4-year-old trained by Doug O’Neill, Goldencents led in the stretch of the Grade 1 Met Mile but was beaten a length by the mighty Palace Malice, the 6-5 favorite.
Co-owned by Josh Kaplan, Goldencents has won 5 of 14 starts and $2,224,000. His 2013 stakes wins included the Santa Anita Derby and Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile. He was 17th in the Kentucky Derby and fifth in the Preakness Stakes last year.
Goldencents will be retired at the end of this season to stand at stud at Spendthrift Farm in Kentucky. Sorgenstein said he has retained an ownership share and plans to be involved in breeding.
“We’ll have a good amount [of shares], and we’re in the market for fillies to send to him,” he said.
