Goldencents juvenile ties OBS record for fastest quarter-mile

Joe Nevills|Mar 10, 2018

The third and final breeze show for the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. March sale of 2-year-olds in training was highlighted by a record-tying performance by a first-crop Goldencents colt, who tied the auction company’s fastest time at a quarter-mile at 20 1/5 seconds.

Saturday’s blazing breeze came from Hip 567, a colt out of the unraced Unbridled’s Song mare Royale Paradise, whose first foal to race is a winner. Bred in Kentucky by Pollock Farms, the colt is from the family of Grade 2 winners Royale Michele and Cagey Exuberance as well as stakes winners Nimble, Lily La Belle, Killing Me, and Excess Thrilling.

Beryl Stokes Jr. bought the colt for $115,000 at last year's Keeneland September yearling sale. He is consigned by Hoby and Layna Kight as agent.

The time was two-fifths of a second faster than any other horse at the distance during the sale’s three breeze shows. The horses work over the Ocala Training Center’s all-weather Safetrack surface.

Other horses to stop the clock at 20 1/5 seconds at previous OBS sales include Mourinho, a contender on this year’s Kentucky Derby trail by Super Saver who sold to Phoenix Thoroughbreds for $625,000 at last March’s sale. Amoral, a Scat Daddy colt, achieved the same time at the 2014 OBS June sale of 2-year-olds and horses of racing age sale and sold to Stonestreet Stables for $270,000.

Nine horses equaled the fastest time at an eighth of a mile on Saturday, covering the distance in 9 4/5 seconds. Those efforts tied the fastest one-furlong workouts from the first two days of the under-tack show, bring the overall number to 19.

• Hip 97, a Shanghai Bobby colt out of the stakes-winning Is It True mare True Kiss, whose five winners from six runners include Grade 2-placed One True Kiss and Tiz Kissable. Consigned by King's Equine as agent, the colt is from the family of Canadian champion Kiss a Native; Grade 1 winners Silver Max and Yes It's True; and Grade 3 winner Prince of the Mt.
