Golden Snake retired with injury

Alan Shuback|Aug 08, 2001

Golden Snake, a four-time Group 1 winner in France, Germany, and Italy, has been retired at age 5 after injuring a knee in training.

A son of Danzig bred in Kentucky, Golden Snake took the 1 1/8-mile Prix Jean Prat in 1999. Last year, he won the Europa-Preis and the Gran Premio del Jockey Club and Coppa d'Oro, both at 1 1/2 miles last year before landing the 1 5/16-mile Prix Ganay in April. He also finished a neck second to Fantastic Light in this year's Group 1 Tattersalls Gold Cup at The Curragh.

In 14 starts, Golden Snake won six times for earnings of $541,672. He will stand at The National Stud in Newmarket, England.
