ELMONT, N.Y. - Golden Glider, the Peter Pan Stakes runner-up, completed his preparations for Saturday’s Belmont Stakes by working an easy half-mile in 49.94 seconds Sunday morning over Belmont Park’s main track. A day after six prospective Belmont contenders put in workouts, Golden Glider was the only Belmont Stakes runner to breeze on Sunday. On a gorgeous Sunday morning on Long Island, Golden Glider entered a near-empty main track shortly after 6:15 a.m. After an easy jog down the backside, Golden Glider, under exercise rider Kylie Wellington, crawled away from the pole, going his first eighth in 13.97 seconds, per Daily Racing Form clocker Mike Welsch. Golden Glider got to the quarter pole in 26.55 seconds and, under some slight urging from Wellington in the lane, Golden Glider got his final quarter in 23.39 seconds. He galloped out five furlongs in 1:03.27. :: Bet the Belmont Stakes with confidence! Golden Glider was fifth in the Sam F. Davis, fourth in the Tampa Bay Derby, and fourth in the Blue Grass before running second, 10 1/4 lengths behind We the People, in the Peter Pan on May 7. “I like how he’s doing right now, probably even a little more than before the Peter Pan,” Tripp said. “He’s put on a little weight, his energy’s at a little different level. They all go through changes, but I’m pretty pleased with him. That’s a tough race, but I think he can be competitive. Can’t score a touchdown unless you’re in the game, right?” After the mid-morning renovation break, Kentucky Derby winner Rich Strike had another strong gallop on the main track Sunday going 1 1/2 miles under Gabriel Lagunes. The horse continues to impress his trainer, Eric Reed. “The best day he’s had since he’s been here,” Reed said. “His energy level is soaring today. He’s really happy right now.” Entries for the Belmont will be taken and post positions assigned on Tuesday at 11 a.m. There are nine definites and one possible runner for the Test of the Champion.
