Golden Gate Thursday card consists of seven turf races
Thursday is turf racing catch-up day at Golden Gate Fields.
The track will have a four-day racing week through Sunday, with a seven-race all-turf program on Thursday, beginning at 1:15 p.m. Pacific.
With a program consisting entirely of turf races on Thursday, the number of opportunities to race on the surface will be equal to last year by the end of the day.
Through Sunday, Golden Gate Fields had run 27 turf races at the current meeting, which began Dec. 26. The start of turf racing was postponed until early April because of a wet winter and early spring.
Last year, during a drought, turf racing began in late March, with 34 grass races held through May 1.
Thursday’s program does not have any allowance races, although there is a maiden race at five furlongs to begin the program that includes the first-time starter Roy Hobbs, a 3-year-old colt who is a full-brother to Rose Maddox.
On Saturday, Rose Maddox won the Golden Poppy Stakes on turf for fillies and mares for owner and breeder Nick Alexander and trainer Steve Miyadi, who have the same roles with Roy Hobbs.
The remainder of the program includes three claiming races for maidens and claiming races at $5,000, $6,250, and $12,500.
