Golden Gate to have rare pick five carryover Friday
There is a rare carryover of $59,767 in the 50-cent late pick five at Golden Gate Fields on Friday.
On Monday’s opening day of the track’s winter-spring meeting, the bet proved too tricky. There were no winning favorites in the sequence. Surprise wins by Gabby Hayes ($18.80) in the seventh race and Jaime’s Commitment ($24.20) in the ninth race were tough to isolate.
On Friday, the bet covers the fourth through eighth races on a program that begins at 12:45 p.m. Pacific. The pick five races have fields of 7, 7, 9, 8, and 10 before scratches.

The pool of new money may exceed $300,000. There is a good chance a winning ticket will have a rewarding payout considering there are open fields in several races.
The 50-cent pick five seldom has carryovers at California tracks because of the low cost of tickets and formful results.
Herrera receives 10-day suspension
Jockey Hugo Herrera has been suspended 10 racing days for causing interference that led to a spill in the 10th race at Golden Gate Fields on Dec. 10.
Herrera was cited for careless riding when his mount, Deo, caused a rival horse, Pass the Baton, to shift position, leading Danzing Alydar to clip heels and fall. Danzing Alydar sustained a shoulder injury in the incident and was euthanized.
Jockey Francisco Duran, who rode Danzing Alydar, has not ridden since the spill. Duran said earlier this week that he is seeking medical advice on a knee injury and is uncertain when he will return.
Herrera’s suspension covers racing on Jan. 5-7, 12-15, and 19-21.
