Golden Gate Fields: Zeewat nips No Silent in Lost in the Fog

Vassar Photography Zeewat (1), with Russell Baza aboard, outfinishes No Silent by a head in the Lost in the Fog Stakes.

Multiple stakes-winning Zeewat put his head in front of No Silent in the final stride of the $51,605 Lost in the Fog Stakes at Golden Gate Fields on Monday.

Zeewat ($3.60) earned the fifth stakes victory of his career for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer. Ridden by Russell Baze, who teamed with Hollendorfer to win Saturday’s Grade 3 El Camino Real Derby with Tamarando, Zeewat rallied from last just as Tamarando did.

Tizaplayer, who sent a track record at 5 1/2 furlongs in his previous start, set a brisk pace in the six-furlong stakes. He held a one-length lead over No Silent through fractions of 22.85 and 45.57 seconds.

No Silent, content to sit second, stuck his head in front in the lane. He continued strongly to the wire, but Zeewat, who was last early, split rivals in the lane and just did get up.

Breaking from the rail, Zeewat was allowed to settle early. He moved off the rail looking for room on the turn but was two lengths behind No Silent at the eighth pole.

He split runners midway through the stretch as he surged into second. No Silent didn’t waver on the lead, but Zeewat, who finished third in the Grade 1 Malibu in December was in full stride and got up to win a too-close-to-call photo.

Zeewat, a $50,000 Keeneland yearling purchase by Dr. George Todaro and Hollendorfer, earned $30,300 for his seventh career victory in 14 starts, including four wins - three stakes - in six starts at Golden Gate Fields. A son of Harlan’s Holiday, he has earned $361,450.
