Golden Boi, the fastest qualifier from 12 time trials on May 30, cruised to a one-length victory in Sunday’s $1.12 million Ed Burke Million Futurity at Los Alamitos, the first of three seven-figure futurities run annually at the Southern California track. Ridden by Ruben Lozano, Golden Boi had an ideal start from post 8 when the runners to his sides broke away, leaving a clear running path. Golden Boi fought for the early lead with 5-2 favorite In Hott Pursuit for the first 200 yards before pulling away in the final 150 yards. Golden Boi ($10.20) ran 350 yards in 17.43 seconds, quicker than his trial time of 17.62 seconds. In Hott Pursuit finished second, 1 1/4 lengths in front of 30-1 Motiveighted, who was away slowly in the 10-horse field. Golden Boi, a colt by Favorite Cartel, races for M & G Farms and trainer Valentin Zamudio. Golden Boi has won 3 of 4 starts and earned $460,800. Golden Boi won his debut in a maiden special weight race at 220 yards on April 16 and was fourth by a neck in a 300-yard allowance race on May 8 prior to his win in the Ed Burke trials. Later this year, the Golden State Million Futurity will be run on Oct. 31 and the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity will be held on Dec. 12 after time trials determine the fields. Zamudio said Golden Boi will be considered for those races, as well as the lesser Governor’s Cup Futurity, which has time trials on July 10 and a final on July 31.
