Godolphin sweeps TOBA awards for National Breeder of Year, National Owner of Year

Nicole Russo|Sep 11, 2022

Godolphin swept honors as both National Owner of the Year and National Breeder of the Year as the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association (TOBA) held its annual awards presentations on Sept. 9 and 10 in Lexington, Ky.

Godolphin, who also swept Eclipse Award honors for 2021, was chosen as Owner of the Year over fellow finalists Klaravich Stables, Juddmonte, Hronis Racing, and the partnership of China Horse Club and WinStar Farm. National Breeder of the Year finalists included Stonestreet Farm and Fred W. Hertrich III and John D. Fielding.

Godolphin’s honors were presented at an awards dinner Saturday night at Keeneland, at which all the finalists were honored. At the same ceremony, Angie and Sabrina Moore, who bred Horse of the Year Knicks Go, were announced as the winner for 2021 National Small Breeder of the Year. Additional finalists in that category recognized Saturday included Gail Rice and J&J Stables.

At an awards luncheon on Friday at Ashford Stud, TOBA honored 2021 Breeders of the Year across various states and Canada, with Godolphin taking Kentucky honors. Other award winners were McDowell Farms (Arkansas), Lovacres Ranch (California), Sam-Son Farm (Canada), Terrance Greer and Brandon Greer (Canada, small breeder), Live Oak Stud (Florida), Allen Poindexter (Iowa), P. Dale Ladner and Brett Brinkman (Louisiana), Robert Manfuso and Katharine Voss (Maryland), Lothenbach Stables (Minnesota), Law Legacy Stables (New Jersey), Crystal Springs (New Mexico), Chester and Mary Broman (New York), Elizabeth Muirhead (North Carolina), Nirvana Farm (Oregon), Joe-Dan Farm and George Chestnut (Pennsylvania), Franklin Smith Sr. (South Carolina), Lisa Kuhlmann (Texas), Morgan's Ford Farm (Virginia), and Rainbow Meadows Farm (Washington).

Several other awards were also presented by TOBA, including posthumous honors for Dr. J. David Richardson with the TOBA Industry Service Award. Indian Miss was named National Broodmare of the Year, adding that to her Kentucky Broodmare of the Year title presented in April.

The Cot Campbell Partnership of the Year was presented to Mrs. John Magnier, Michael B. Tabor, Derrick Smith, and Westerberg.

Miles Ahead was honored as Claiming Crown Horse of the Year, presented by the National HBPA. The Rood and Riddle Sport Horse of the Year went to Argyle, whose Jockey Club name is Office Hours. The Robert N. Clay Award, presented by Equine Land Conservation Resource, was awarded to Charles Fenwick Jr., which recognizes a member of the Thoroughbred community who has made an outstanding contribution to preserving land for equine use.
