Go Milan Go rebounds with Donna Reed victory

Patrick Lemoreaux|Aug 08, 2010

ALTOONA, Iowa - Go Milan Go ($5) returned to the winning form she showed earlier in the year, holding off the late charge of Tak a Joke to win the $85,000 Donna Reed at Prairie Meadows by 1 1/4 lengths.

The Donna Reed was among seven statebred stakes on a nine-race card Saturday, the final night of Thoroughbred racing at Prairie Meadows.

Go Milan Go set uncontested fractions of 23.84 and 47.76 seconds and had a five-length lead at the head of the stretch. She was all out inside the final furlong to outlast Tak a Joke. Go Milan Go finished a mile and 70 yards in 1:43.70.

The win was her second of the year and followed races in which she was beaten by seven lengths and 8 3/4 lengths.

Also on the card:

*Lucky Daz ($14.40) broke sharply and outdueled 4-5 stablemate Launch Light Lady to win the $75,000 Iowa Sorority, which featured eight 2-year-old fillies going six furlongs. Both trained by Kelly Von Hemel, Lucky Daz and Launch Light Lady battled through fractions of 21.71 and 44.75 before Lucky Daz drew away in the stretch to win by 2 3/4 lengths. The winning time was 1:11.18.

*Dynamic Within ($4) led gate to wire and scored an eight-length win in the $75,000 Iowa Cradle for 2-year-old males going six furlongs. Alex Birzer rode Dynamic Within, who finished in 1:10.21.

*Abydos ($32) rallied from seventh to win the $75,000 Iowa Breeders’ Oaks by a length. The winning time for a mile and 70 yards was 1:44.27.

*Cainam ($5.80) capped off a four-win campaign at the meet by scoring a two-length win in the $75,000 Iowa Breeders’s Derby. Cainam began a lengthy rally entering the far turn and wore out pace-setter Wings of War (23.03, 46.76) inside the final furlong, finishing 1 1/16 miles in 1:45.51.

*Wild L ($4), returning from an eight-month layoff, wore down pace-setter Mutti Blues to win the $60,000 Iowa Classic Sprint by five lengths. The winning time for six furlongs was 1:09.14.

*Kate’s Main Man ($8.40) gamely turned back Tiger Lake's bid at the top of the stretch, then held off a late rally by Spirit of Winter to win the $85,000 Ralph Hayes by a diminishing length. Kate's Main Man went 1 1/16 miles in 1:44.40.
