ETOBICOKE, Ontario – It will be Take 2 for Go Kart Mozart at Woodbine when the Robert Tiller-trained 4-year-old hits the track for the second time in a week in Sunday’s featured conditioned allowance/optional claimer at six furlongs. Go Kart Mozart was feeling a little too good before last Sunday’s Thorncliffe Stakes. He got loose shortly after the post parade and was scratched after unseating jockey Sofia Vives. Go Kart Mozart used his speed to win five of eight starts and nearly $300,000 last year. He won two 3-year-old Ontario-sired stakes, the Lake Huron on the inner turf and the Lake Erie on the dirt at Fort Erie, after which he cleared the first open allowance condition on the Tapeta here Oct. 12. Go Kart Mozart’s last race, on Nov. 29, was a third after setting the pace going five-eighths at the same level at which he’s competing on Sunday. Rafael Hernandez takes over on the Frank DiGiulio Jr. homebred after Vives chose to ride Piper’s Factor. :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! DRF Past Performances and Picks are available now. A 5-year-old trained by Katerina Vassilieva, Piper’s Factor took the one-mile Toronto Cup over yielding turf in the summer of 2024 under Vives. He has since gone winless while often competitive in stakes and allowance/optional-claiming company. On Sunday, off a six-month layoff, the fast worker will compete at a distance much shorter than usual for him. “He’s always shown speed and can be headstrong in his races,” Vassilieva said. “He hasn’t always been able to carry his speed over longer distances, especially if he has a challenging trip. I always wondered what would happen if he was just left alone breaking out of the gate on his own devices going a shorter distance.” Summer Commander, Garden of War, Light the Lamp, Foresters Exec, and Ironstone are all starting for the first time since last fall. After leading all the way in a first-level allowance in September, Summer Commander finished fourth and fifth in his two starts at this level in the fall. The 5-year-old usually acquits himself well when fresh under the guidance of trainer Stuart Simon. Garden of War is making his 4-year-old debut for perennial leading Woodbine trainer Mark Casse, who has a 13 percent strike rate with six-month-plus layoff types. He wintered in Florida and at Turfway Park after finishing fourth in his first try at this level in September and has been working here on a regular schedule. Light the Lamp had a productive 2025 season after the now 7-year-old was reclaimed by trainer Don MacRae for $32,000 in December of 2024. Foresters Exec earned low Beyers in the upper 60s during his three-race winning streak against easier in the fall. :: Get ready for Preakness with DRF past performances, picks, and betting strategies! Ironstone, victorious in the Grade 3 Ontario Derby in 2022, is winless in his last 16 outings for trainer Willy Armata. Rounding out the field is Magic Power, who benefited from a speed bias when clearing the first allowance condition off a five-month absence April 19.
