Go Kart Mozart seeks fourth win in a row in Lake Superior

Michael Burns Go Kart Mozart will go for his fourth win in a row in Sunday's Lake Superior at Woodbine.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Go Kart Mozart goes for his fourth win in a row while switching to Woodbine’s main turf in Sunday’s $100,000 Lake Superior, one of two six-furlong grass stakes for Ontario-sired 3-year-olds on the card, along with the $100,000 Thunder Bay.

Trained by Robert Tiller for owner Frank DiGuilio Jr., Go Kart Mozart has won three in a row in front-running style. Most recently in the five-furlong Lake Huron Stakes on the inner turf, he broke on top under Sofia Vives before dueling two wide for the lead with Dark Screen, who opened up a half-length lead entering the lane. Go Kart Mozart battled back through the final furlong to prevail in a quick time of 56.92 seconds.

“He’s been breaking really sharp,” Vives said. “I was actually glad to see another horse come up next to him and challenge him. He showed that he could dig in. He was much the best.”

Dark Screen has worked five furlongs in a fast 59 seconds on the Tapeta since coming up a half-length short in the Lake Huron. The erratic gelding would be dangerous on a repeat of that performance, his first on turf.

Deputy Daddy’s positive experience on the main course is a feather in his cap. He won an Ontario-sired allowance with a 76 Beyer Speed Figure on June 15 after earning his diploma on the Tapeta in May.

“When the new condition book came out, I saw the turf race,” trainer Rick Hayashi said. “It was three weeks after the win and I thought if he ran well in the turf race, we would sit on him until the Lake Superior. He showed he could handle the turf, so here we are.”

Thunder Bay

Trainer Kevin Attard saddles Rhaenyra, Brengungirl, and Zippy Gamble in the Thunder Bay for fillies. His father, trainer Tino Attard, runs Wozniacki, who is owned by Kevin’s son and daughter, Joshua and Taylor.

Rhaenyra graduated in her season debut and is coming off a gate-to-wire tally in the June 22 Georgian Bay Stakes, the filly equivalent of the Lake Huron.

Brengungirl captured the South Ocean Stakes at 2. The daughter of Point of Entry is making her turf debut and is bred for the task at hand.

Zippy Gamble rallied for third in the five-furlong Georgian Bay. Leading rider Pietro Moran was named on her and Rhaenyra.

Wozniacki started twice on the Tapeta in June, landing her debut before a closing third in an Ontario-sired allowance.

Pink Lloyd

Trainer John Ross looks to have a foothold on Sunday’s $100,000 Pink Lloyd Stakes when he sends out the Junior Hot Shot and Its Time to Shine in the six-furlong Tapeta sprint for older Ontario-sired runners.

Junior Hot Shot won two of his last three starts in open allowance/optional-claiming company, earning an 87 Beyer most recently after closing from far back to prevail after a troubled start. His versatility in terms of running style is one of his most effective weapons.

Its Time to Shine put away the other speed before giving way late to Junior Hot Shot in the aforementioned June 29 event. He scored twice in front-running style in May, against Ontario-sired allowance stock and open allowance company.
