Del Mar

Glatt has strong one-two punch

Jay Privman|Jul 29, 2014

DEL MAR, Calif. – Trainer Mark Glatt has got them surrounded in Thursday’s featured seventh race at Del Mar. His two fillies, both among the premier runners in the race, have contrasting styles, which gives Glatt a chance to win either on the lead or from behind.

Goodbye Roselina, winner of both her starts, should be among the early leaders, while Blake’s Magic has a solid late kick. They are among a maximum of eight runners scheduled to go five furlongs on turf in an optional claimer for older females that carries a $77,000 purse.

“It looks like there’s a lot of speed in the race,” Glatt said Tuesday morning in the Del Mar stable area. “Blake’s Magic is going to need a quick scenario up front. She’ll come with a good run. She’s got a pretty good little burst.”

There were 14 entered in the race, but with the turf rails set 18 feet from their innermost position, thus narrowing the course, only eight will run. The eight who drew into the main body of the race, including both Goodbye Roselina and Blake’s Magic, all have their first allowance condition. The only horses entered for the $40,000 claiming price all are on the also-eligible list.

LEADING CONTENDERS

GOODBYE ROSELINA (Beyers: 75-69)

◗ Did not get to the races until this year.

◗ She used her sharp speed to beat maiden claimers in her debut, then beat a starter-allowance field.

◗ This will be the strongest field she’s met in her brief career, and she is trying turf for the first time.

“We knew she had some ability all along,” Glatt said. “She just had one little thing after another. She’s all racehorse. She wants to beat you.”

BLAKE’S MAGIC (Last 3 Beyers: 79-77-80)

◗ Owns two wins, which came at six furlongs on turf at Hollywood Park and going a mile at Santa Anita.

◗ She’s never run at a distance this short.

◗ Glatt said he was worried the distance might be too short, but was hoping a quick pace would compensate.

UPBEAT MOOD (Last 3 Beyers: 76-86-83)

◗ Should be part of an expected hot pace with Goodbye Roselina and Serious.

◗ She has been freshened since tiring in a downhill turf sprint at Santa Anita more than two months ago.

◗ Though she’s finished in the money in 7 of 10 starts, she owns just one win, and four runner-up finishes.

◗ Her lone victory came more than two years ago, in her second start, at age 2.

DRF FORMULATOR FACT: Trainer Mike Puype is 7 for 18 with a $3.82 ROI over the past two years in turf sprints following a layoff of between 61 and 180 days.Click for more details. – Mike Hogan

LEMON DE ORO (Last 3 Beyers: 65-81-79)

◗ An intriguing turn-back play, returning to a sprint after going a mile against stakes horses.

◗ She’s also adding blinkers.
