As he works his way out of a rough patch, Virginia-bred Gigante will return home as a heavy favorite in the $125,000 Find Stakes at Colonial Downs on Saturday. The 1 1/16-mile race will be trainer Steve Asmussen’s first stakes at the track since 2023, when Gigante completed a three-start stint that included a victory in the Grade 2 Secretariat. “We’re excited to get him back to Colonial,” Asmussen said. “His Secretariat win was very exciting and the best win of his career. He’s been a wonderful horse for us, and I’m hoping that this is the right spot to get him back to winning.” Since finishing second by a neck in the Grade 2 Muniz Memorial Classic at Fair Grounds, Gigante has finished out of the money in three straight starts. His sixth-place finish in the $250,000 Texas Turf Classic at Lone Star Park last time out was the hardest to dismiss. “Planned on him winning and he didn’t,” Asmussen said. “You know? Next. I’ve been wrong about that before and I’m probably gonna be wrong about that again, but you keep trying to get it done.” :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! Back on the turf at Colonial, where he has earned two of his six stakes victories, Gigante is the 6-5 morning-line favorite in the state-restricted field of six. Hardspun Reason, the 3-1 second choice trained by Graham Motion, will return to stakes company after a near-miss in an $80,000 allowance last month. The 6-year-old gelding closed fast to finish third by a half-length despite steadying badly at the start and near the wire. “I thought he was extremely unlucky last time,” Motion said. “I thought it was bizarre that the stewards didn’t look at it longer. He was clearly impeded, but I thought both his races this year have been very good.” All Brandy Lifelovenlaughter, a Maryland-bred mare trained by Mike Trombetta, will try to earn her second straight state-restricted stakes victory in the $125,000 All Brandy Stakes at Colonial Downs on Saturday. “We’ve been very pleased with her,” Trombetta said. “She’s only had a couple races this season, but she’s made good on both of them. We’ve been waiting for this spot.” In June, Trombetta’s mare cut back to six furlongs and won the $100,000 Jameela. It was her first turf sprint since her 2022 debut, but she adjusted well to take down a seasoned group that included Hollywood Walk, her stablemate and next-out winner of the $150,000 Andy Guest at Colonial. Though she handled the cutback last time, Lifelovenlaughter will return to her comfort zone in the 1 1/16-mile All Brandy. She is the 8-5 morning-line favorite in the field of eight Maryland- and Virginia-bred rivals, which includes two more last-out stakes winners in state-restricted company. Winfinity, a 3-year-old filly trained by John Ortiz, will switch to turf for her first start against older fillies and mares on Saturday. The 3-1 second choice improved on dirt last time out to win the $125,000 Miss Disco, her second stakes victory at Colonial. Thursday Girl, a 4-year-old filly trained by Brittany Russell, took down an unsuspecting field in the $125,000 Brookmeade at 12-1 odds last time out. It was her first victory since September 2024, when she won a $12,500 claiming race. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
