Gierkink's Woodbine horses to watch for week of Oct. 12
JAVA’S BOURBON
Trainer: Roger Attfield
Last race: Oct. 10, 7th
Finish: 2nd by 1/2
Beyer: 87
As usual, this Not Bourbon colt was rambunctious in the paddock before he went out and ran lights-out in an Ontario-sired allowance in which he set a fast pace before giving way grudgingly. He could be any kind if he’s ever gelded.
NOBLE THOUGHT
Trainer: Malcolm Pierce
Last race: Oct. 10, 2nd
Finish: 3rd by 1 1/2
Beyer: 62
He was jostled at the start and then lacked room in the lane before hitting the board for the third time in as many starts in a seven-furlong maiden special weight race. The son of Harlan’s Holiday is bred to run long and shouldn’t be held off much longer.
CAPE ZAVATA
Trainer: Larry Cappuccitti
Last race: Oct. 11, 7th
Finish: 3rd by 1 1/2
Beyer: 67
After back-to-back disappointing runs on dirt at Fort Erie, he battled between rivals in a speed duel before weakening in the final sixteenth of a $6,250 route on Polytrack. His next start will be the fourth of his form cycle, and it could be a winning one.
