Gierkink's review: Carey doubles up
Wednesday, June 11, review
Abbreviated card lacks excitement
Only seven races were carded, instead of the usual eight on a Wednesday night, which enabled just about everybody involved to hit the sack a little earlier than usual.
Woodbine could really use a pick five with a low takeout to spice up the beginning of the Wednesday programs. If such a bet had been offered on this card, it would have included two 13-horse turf events, along with several small fields that would have made the wager feasible for those with a limited bankroll. There’s nothing wrong with tinkering with the betting menu to make it more appealing to a variety of handicappers.
Carey doubles up
Trainer Julia Carey continued her good run here this spring with a two-bagger. Emma-Jayne Wilson won her second straight race in the third aboard the Carey-trained first-timer Stormy Fling, who aired on the front end in a $50,000 turf sprint, returning $16.60.
Carey also took the nightcap with the dropping front-runner Foresters Affair, who returned a generous $10.40 under apprentice Sheena Ryan. The favored Queensbury Rules, a 7-year-old making his 30th start, rallied for second under the 10-pound bug Jenna Bray, who seems poised to win her first race.
Horse to Watch
ANGRY MOON
Trainer: Brian Lynch
Last race: June 11, 4th
Finish: 3rd by 1 3/4
Beyer: 71
He went way too fast on the lead in a seven-furlong conditioned claimer on grass but only gave way in the last sixteenth in his first start for a productive barn. The son of Langfuhr seems poised to earn his keep as a turf sprinter.
