Gierkink's preview: Phil's Dream the key
Monday, May 19 preview
New Providence Stakes
Handicapping this six-furlong dash for older Ontario-sired stock revolves around what to make of the comeback race from Phil’s Dream, Canada’s reigning champion sprinter. He was fully expected to win the 5 1/2-furlong allowance prep for this stakes, but was overtaken in late stretch by Citius, who was a solid $40,000 claimer last year. Phil’s Dream didn’t have much down time over the winter, and had worked in his usual brisk manner heading into the prep. Has he lost a step, or did he simply need the race?
Eight-year-old Paso Doble merits a long look in his second race after a long layoff. The stocky chestnut won last year’s New Providence for trainer Mark Casse, who also sent him out to finish second in the 2012 renewal. Paso Doble’s new trainer this year is Mark Fournier, who’s had great success with another old gelding, the 16-time winner Ronaldino.
Spot plays
The following are some contenders who may be overlooked.
Race 2, Dupes
He got away about two lengths behind the field before parlaying a three-wide stalking trip into a runner-up finish behind a rival who ran out of his skin. This will be the third start of his form cycle.
Race 5, Ascot Martin
He missed the break and took the long way home while mounting a belated rally in a six-furlong maiden special. He needs more ground, and should welcome the stretch-out to seven-eighths here with leading rider Luis Contreras retaining the mount.
Race 9, Underground Queen
Her second and most recent start Dec. 14 was much improved. She closed four wide from off slow splits over an inside-favoring track to end up second behind a next-out winner. This will be her first start with Lasix and Gerry Olguin up.
