Gierkink's preview: Jackpot Hi 5 carryover exceeds $300K
No stakes on this challenging 10-race card. The portable rail on the turf course is in lane 4.
A large field of Ontario-sired maidens will square off in the nightcap, which is scheduled for 1 1/16 miles on the grass. It’s the type of race in which the Jackpot Hi 5 could be won outright if longshots fill out the top five positions. The carryover is $308,065.
Another Bid (3-1) is the perfect horse to use underneath. The professional maiden has been second in four consecutive routes at this level on both local surfaces. Emma-Jayne Wilson inherits the mount from the leading bug Sheena Ryan, who’s riding the 20-1 outsider He’s the Right One. The latter, a son of Sligo Bay, is turf negative on the dam’s side and is questionable on the surface.
Cool Luke (6-1) is adding Lasix while being reunited with apprentice Nick Webb, who was aboard for his closing third behind Another Bid in a 10-furlong turf marathon July 26.
Winning Shot (5-1) brings good Polytrack form to this event. He landed on the edges in his only turf start going short and should be a factor with Eurico Da Silva taking over from Webb.
Juveniles stretch out in the second
The first two-turn maiden special of the meet for 2-year-olds will be run over a mile and 70 yards, and pedigree can play a significant role in the handicapping process.
Crown Prince (2-1) is by the champion sprinter Smoke Glacken, but the gelding is the first foal from a route winner. Trainer Kelly Callaghan is taking the blinkers off following a fading fourth on the grass behind the talented twosome of Passion for Action and Conquest Typhoon.
Hey Jabber Jaw (6-1), a huge son of Mineshaft, showed little in his seven-furlong debut after acting a bit studdish in the paddock. He’s bred to sprint on the dam’s side, but it’s hard to imagine him not wanting to go a route of ground.
Charlie’s Wisdom (5-2), by the disappointing sire Corinthian, wasn’t an impact player while placing in two of his four outings. His dam’s lone route starter failed to find the mark.
Calgacus (3-1) went four wide on the turn before ending up eighth for the second time in two tries in an Aug. 17 maiden special on the lawn. The Bluegrass Cat gelding is the second foal from a stakes-placed router and might wake up with blinkers on.

She ran lights out first time off the claim, leading until deep stretch in a $40,000 turf sprint for non-winners of two. The versatile daughter of Limehouse broke her maiden on the Polytrack two starts ago and appears to be well worth the $16,000 for which she was claimed.
