Gierkink's preview: Favorite vulnerable in Lady Angela Stakes
Lady Angela Stakes
On Rainbow Bridge is an extremely vulnerable favorite in the $125,000 Lady Angela Stakes and likely will be higher than her 5-2 morning line quote by the time they run the Ontario-sired 3-year-old filly sprint. She missed some works earlier this spring due to a training accident in which she was scraped up a little. She must negotiate seven furlongs from the one hole off an eight-month break, and trainer Dave Cotey told me he’d prefer to have the race at the more layoff-friendly distance of six furlongs.
The once-beaten She Ain’t Bad won both of her starts this spring in a pair of six-furlong Ontario-sired allowances, and she shouldn’t mind running back in two weeks off a troubled run. Her main obstacle might be the longer distance, according to trainer Bob Tiller, who also entered Sweater Weather.
Sweater Weather is turning back off a 1 1/16-mile Ontario-sired allowance score in which she had everything her own way on the front end. She was second to She Ain’t Bad two back, and seven-eighths should be a suitable distance for the daughter of Milwaukee Brew, who is also nominated to next weekend’s $500,000 Woodbine Oaks.
Shipper odds-on in the opener
Arlington-based Good Bye Greg spices up a five-horse field in the first and is the 2-5 morning line favorite in the seven-furlong optional claimer for 3-year-olds. The Larry Rivelli trainee romped in his only start May 3 on Arlington’s Polytrack, scoring by 13 lengths in a time that earned him a 95 Beyer Speed Figure. Journeyman E. T. Baird, a noted speed rider, retains the mount on the promising son of Teuflesberg.
