Gierkink's preview: Carryover growing in Jackpot Hi 5
Jackpot Hi 5 carryover building
The Jackpot Hi 5 carryover heading into Saturday’s nightcap is $354,672. Don’t be surprised if there’s a mandatory payout on the tricky wager on Woodbine Mile Day on Sept. 14.
Milwaukee Flash is the 5-2 morning line favorite in the 1 1/16-mile turf route for older Ontario-sired maidens. He got drilled Aug. 17 in his turf debut, but that came in the 12-furlong Breeders’ Stakes, and he deserves a chance to redeem himself. David Moran, who was aboard for his two in-the-money placings in June and July, has the mount.
Conquista Grande (8-1) is a longshot prospect, as he shortens up off a wide fourth in his first turf start in a 10-furlong maiden special. Cool Luke (10-1) is also worth a look in his second race with Lasix.
Bold Expresso (3-1) is experimenting on a new surface without much turf breeding, after running hot and cold in his first two career outings earlier this summer.
DRF FORMULATOR FACT: Bold Expresso’s trainer, Earl Barnett, is 0 for 17 first-time on grass and 1 for 36 with synthetic to turf starters over the last five years.
Eighth-race allowance heads card
An overnight stakes for Saturday failed to fill, and the nominal feature is a first-level allowance sprint for fillies and mares, which has a base purse of $58,600.
Kay’s Grace (8-5) is returning from a break after nearly winning a similar event July 20. She drew well on the outside, and should have a lovely stalking trip under regular rider Matt Moore. She is eligible for Ontario-sired and Ontario-bred bonus money, which means that she will run for a whopping $93,700 pot.
Conquest Whiplash (3-1) and Its the Rush (7-2) are the two front-runners in the seven-horse field. Both seem vulnerable over the 6 1/2-furlong distance, unless one can outrun the other for the early lead.
Pivotal seventh race
The seventh race rounds out the early pick four, which has a guaranteed pool of $100,000, and begins the late one.
Grace Phil (3-1) is coming off a determined win and a $25,000 claim by trainer Mike Doyle. The classy stakes winner is starting from the widest post in this seven-furlong starter allowance, and has done her optimum running from the first flight on the outside.
DRF FORMULATOR FACT: Doyle is 1 for 8 (13 percent) first-time off the claim during the past five years, with a return on investment of $1.26.
Big Brown Brookski (8-5) has been in solid turf form since she defeated $12,500 conditioned opposition in her last Polytrack excursion June 6. She could hook up on the lead with Starship Sabrina (6-1), who wired a good field of $20,000 claimers in her latest on Polytrack.
Starship Sabrina is coupled in the Scott Fairlie-trained entry with Mistress Gallop, who will be scratched in favor of a $16,000 claimer on Wednesday.
